The Western Kansas Community Foundation (WKCF) began in 1996 as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. The WKCF represents the broadest charitable interests as a collection of funds from many donors who, acting together, have an impact on improving all aspects of the quality of life in the 15 counties of southwest Kansas. Soon after receiving its 501(c)3 designation, the board set out to engage supporters in the idea of the community foundation and how it would benefit southwest Kansas in perpetuity. Fifty area visionary individuals, families and businesses donated $10,000 each to create a permanent endowment of $500,000 called the Founderís Fund. From this early beginning, the WKCF has experienced significant growth over the years through generous support and passionate leadership to now include assets of over $20 million.
The Foundation is governed and administered by a volunteer board of directors and is designed to accommodate the philanthropic wishes, special concerns and interests of donors. The Board is responsible for oversight of the Foundation and that a reasonable rate of return is achieved on all funds entrusted to its care.
WKCF helps grow philanthropy by providing a vehicle for individuals, families and businesses to give back through donor advised, designated, field of interest and other charitable tools. The Foundationís pool of unrestricted funds is granted on a quarterly bases and used to award competitive, high-impact grants to support nonprofit organizations and charitable entities.
